Shriners Hospital orthopaedists visit the Paraskevaides Foundation

300 children examined by Shriners Hospital orthopaedists during visit to the Parakskevaides Foundation

Nicosia, Cyprus – The George & Thelma Paraskevaides Foundation is proud to announce the recent 40th annual visit of the North American “Shriners Hospitals for Children” orthopaedic surgeons, which took place between the 16th and 20th of January. After a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic, the ongoing collaboration, which has been in place for over four decades and has helped improve the lives of over 3,900 children with severe orthopaedic conditions, delivered on its promise.

A team of doctors from the world-renowned Shriners Hospital visited Cyprus and examined over 300 children free of charge, in line with the Foundation’s mission to provide the highest standard of care and medical treatment to children in need. Over the past 40 years, more than 16,000 children have been examined by the Shriners Hospital team during their visits to Cyprus.

Health Minister Michalis Hadjipantela visited the team of specialists on the site and expressed his deep gratitude to the medical team and the Paraskevaides Foundation for their service to those in need. He also expressed his hope that cooperation between the Shriners Hospital and Cyprus will continue to grow in expertise and know-how.

In 2018, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Health, the George and Thelma Paraskevaides Foundation, and the Shriners Hospitals for Children. The agreement provides for the strengthening of cooperation between the three institutions and the expansion of synergies in the areas of education and health research.

The George & Thelma Paraskevaides Foundation is the only non-American approved “Shriners Examination Center” where children from around the world can be examined by Shriners medical professionals. This annual visit by the Shriners Hospital team has helped to solidify the partnership between the esteemed institution and the Foundation, which began in 1981.

The examinations by Shriners doctors took place at the Foundation to provide young patients with the highest quality medical care in a safe and familiar environment. As a result of this collaboration, countless Cypriot children diagnosed with urgent orthopaedic needs have been sponsored for treatment in the USA by the George and Thelma Paraskevaides Foundation.

The Foundation remains committed to its mission of providing care and treatment to children with serious orthopaedic conditions and continues to work closely with the Shriners Hospital to improve the lives of children in need.
